Welcome to the Not-Yet-Named bbs!
This file is intended to explain to you the basic policies for
this bulletin board system. The first thing I would like to mention
is that I require all of the users on this bbs to enter their real
names, addresses, phone numbers, etc., no exceptions. I do not
allow anyone to have an alias entered into the "real name" portion
of their user record, so don't even ask. There is a seperate part of
the user record for your alias if you choose to use one, but that
will be discussed later.
1. The Software
The software I am running is called "Mach-10 bbs" and is written
completely in Turbo Pascal version 5.0. Turbo Pascal offers many
advantages over other operating system, in turn making the bbs much
more powerful than other bbs systems. The software is public domain
and is available for download if you wish to use it to set up your
own bulletin board system.
2. Doors
This systems does support "Doors". Doors are programs which can
be run remotely. These mainly consist of online games and simulations.
The doors are a nice way to have fun on the bbs -- most of them are
multi-player therefore allowing competition. The doors are accessable
from the main menu under the "D" command for validated users.
3. Validation
I require all users on this system to be call-validated. The validation
system is automatic and can be accessed from the main menu. You may still
participate on the bbs non-validated, but you will not be allowed to
access the doors or the files section. More instructions on how the
call-validation system works may be displayed by selecting the
option.
4. Other computers
I fully support computers other than IBM and you may join non-IBM
areas from the conference option on the main menu. Other computer
areas have their own message areas and file areas and in some instances,
their own menus. Each conference is run by a different person
known as a "sigop". For information on applying to a certain conference,
contact the sigop of that area.
5. Message areas
In adition to conferences, there are message areas. Message areas are
simply different areas where messages are kept. It is improtant to
understand the difference between conferences and areas. Conferences
are kind of an extension to message areas -- they have their own
file and message areas (usually).
6. Graphics
The Mach-10 software has support for 4 types of graphics - None,
Ascii, ansi-color, and ansi-music. The first type is for any non-ibm
computer. The second type (Ascii) is identical to the "none" type
except it also allows the IBM extended charcter set to be allowed. The
two ansi options (color and music) require an IBM or compatible with
ansi support built in -- most terminal programs for the IBM have ansi
support built in.
7. Donations
Due to the high operating cost of maintaining a bbs system, I need
donations from users from time to time to pay for repairing or buying
new hardware, additional phone lines, etc. I offer 20 minutes of
extra time as well as exclusion from the upload and post ratios
for anyone who sends in a donation of $20 or greater. Any donations
will be put directly into the system, not my pocket. My address is
listed at the end of this doccument if you wish to send any
donations.
8. Automessages
Automessages are displayed directly after welcome file and right
before the mail check. They are mainly messages from me that I put
up in order to inform users of recent developements in the system and
other general news. I will also put up a message for you on request
if you have anything important that you would like all of the users
to know about. All automessages are displayed only once and on your
first logon, you will probably get a dump of about 5 of them.
9. Ratios
There are two ratios on this system. The first is a ratio of the
number of messages you post to the number of times you logon. You are
required to have a certain ratio of this in order to gain access to
the files section. The purpose of this is keep up activity in the message
system instead of just having everyone upload and download all of
the time.
The second ratio is a ratio of the number of Kilobytes you have
uploaded to the total number of kilobytes transferred (uploads+
downloads). You are required to have a certain percentage in
order to use the download option.
You may check what your upload ratio is required to be by the
"A" - access profile command of the utilities section. Note: The
number reported will be your required ratio, not what your ratio
actually is.
If you absolutely, totally cannot stand these ratios, then you
always have the option of sending in the $20 donation. I will not
respond to any messages complaining about the ratios -- I just don't
have time for it.
10. Time limits
The time limit for normal users is 40 minutes per day and the
time limit for donating users is 60 minutes. For more info, see
the topic about donations.
11. How to contact me
I can be contacted either through the "comment-to-the-sysop" option
or by paging me. I have school durring the day so I can only be
contacted from about 4:00pm to 11:00pm weekdays, and various times
on the weekend.
12. Profanity
No profanity will be tolerated in any of the areas on the bbs unless
they specifically state that it is allowed (such as an adult area,
perhaps). If you use profanity you will be warned once, and if you
continue, you will be locked out of the system.
13. Messages
You must understand that I have access to ALL messages on the system
including public or private in any conference on the system. If you
don't want what you post read, then don't post it.
14. My liability and disclaimer
I am not responsible for anything on my system. I'm not responsible
for the content of any of the messages or the content of any file in
the files area. I'm not responsible for the actions of any user on
the system either.
